he has brought his DAT round to pick up breaks这是个非常友好的地方,在录音室里大家互相间都很帮忙,想出不少主意。 ”

Pip Diaz (who runs the up and coming Cup of Tea records). Ben Dubuisson在Henry & Louis and Smith & Mighty 和 the More Rockers的其余人合集录音了一张名为Vision Factory的录音室专辑。

他说“It's small outside of house as everything seems to be,尽管house已濒临彻底死亡。

“我在做它时,我们让Kruder &Dorfmeister的每个人to getting regular drum and bass DJs outside of a jungle night, 让Geoff Barrow 和 Andy Smith 在四个录音座上打碟。在'Bass is Maternal'正式发行后More Rockers ;Smith & Mighty在那里第一次做了特别表演。

The Bristol Revolution - Down with the Purple Penguin

Forget Britpop, Bristol has become the mecca for the new wave of British innovation in music. With the success of bands such as Massive Attack, Portishead, and Tricky on a national and international level, the Bristol scene is looking stronger than ever.

I met up with Ben Dubuisson, who runs Purple Penguin Records, DJs and still finds time to record his own material under the monicker of Purple Penguin.

Purple Penguin Records is situated in an interesting, leftfield, row of specialist shops just above Colston Hall. The music sold is a blend of "jazz-funk, hip hop, drum & bass, and experimental hip hop, everything you'd expect to hear in a good club, that isn't house, or strictly jungle, but that gives a good mix of everything." The store especially deals in imported U.S. independent hip hop such as Solesides. A lot of the major retail outlets only deal with major label stuff and trendy independent labels, so it is a breath of fresh air to be able to go somewhere outside of London where you can find Jap Hip Jazz records, avant-garde jazz, rare groove, and other equally refreshing vibes. If you want to bump into some of the Bristol artists, this is a good place to come. "Most of them pop in from time to time, Andy Smith and Geoff Barrow from Portishead buy some of their records from here. Ronnie Size comes in occasionally, he has brought his DAT round to pick up breaks. It's a very friendly place. People help each other out a lot here in the studios and with ideas."

The concept of Purple Penguin started out as an extra night to the well known 'Cup of Tea' nights, which Ben helped organise with Pip Diaz (who runs the up and coming Cup of Tea records). Ben still has close contact with the Cup of Tea posse as he releases his own material on the label. He records his music at the Vision Factory which is where Henry & Louis and Smith & Mighty and the rest of the More Rockers collection record: "I get musicians in like vocalists or trumpet players, and I do the backing tracks." Cup of Tea is really starting to kick up big, especially in Europe where they regularly do gigs. The great thing is that many of the acts can play as live groups, which doesn't restrict the nights to just DJ affairs. The label is still underground and small but it's creating a buzz with the likes of Static, Spaceways, Monk & Canatella , Crustation, and of course Purple Penguin.

I asked Ben what the club scene was like in Bristol: "It's small outside of house as everything seems to be, although the house thing is dying a complete death. Techno might be going some but the house scene has crossed over to mainstream, and it's not pushing any boundaries. The club scene has been more lively than it is at the moment." However, saying that, there are some good nights, and some good clubs; "The night I would say that's creating the biggest buzz at the moment is Sky Juice, at Club Leo's. For instance, they've got Alex Reece playing tonight and they always have slow beats/ grooves in the backroom.

The Cup of Tea night's are still running, there's a Saturday night with John Stapleton doing one room, and Dr. Jam, there is also a night every other Friday night at the Thekla which is a great night ,and is really pushing boundaries. When I was doing it we had everybody from Kruder & Dorfmeister, to getting regular drum and bass DJs outside of a jungle night, to having Geoff Barrow and Andy Smith playing on four decks." More Rockers and Smith & Mighty played their first gig back there after 'Bass is Maternal' finally got released. The rebirth of Smith & Mighty is exciting, they might as well nothave been on the scene, with London Records refusing to put out their material. They were ahead of their time, and the people at London weren't tuned in enough to work that out."

I asked Ben if the jungle scene was kicking it big in Bristol, "Yeah, stuff like Full Cycle (the label co-run by Roni Size and D.J. Krust) is causing a stir, and More Rockers are going strong. Bristol drum and bass has quite a distinctive sound, but it's not something I can quantify. There have been people making this type of music for a long time. Possibly some of the earliest drum and bass records were things by Smith & Mighty."

I guess if you were to try and trace the origins of the 'Bristol Sound', you would have to go back to the hugely influential Dugout Club during the 80s. It was here that the Wild Bunch posse (including Nellee Hooper and 3D, Daddy G, and Mushroom from Massive Attack) first nurtured their talents. I asked Ben what he thought of the recent surge of interest in the Bristol Scene; "The Bristol scene was here before the publicity and it will be here afterwards. The Bristol sound is like the difference between East-coast and West-coast U.S hip hop. It's kind of the nature of the place, it's laid back and it creates that kind of groove. There's a different attitude to life, 120 miles from London it might as well be another world. People don't actually look to London as a focus."

One of the advantages of Bristol is that there is a great cultural mix, however this doesn't lead to antagonism but rather to mutual friendliness, co-operation and a unique sound. Check new sounds on the abstract experimental tip from Purple Penguin, Static, Henry and Louis, Crustation (now signed to a major label), and the rest of the Cup of Tea posse.
