你可以只用一张纸叠成一个“青蛙”吗?或者再叠成一艘双篷船,一套衣服和裤子,一个电话机,甚至一个菠萝?想起来了吧,其实这些在幼儿园时老师都教过我们。这种富有原创性的创作手法发展到现在又被套上了一个时尚的名称“DIY”,即“Do
it Yourself”,虽然只用最简单的材料和工具,但我们可以照样创造出许多奇妙的玩意。在“DIY”这股风潮席卷之下,许多人开始尝试只用一台电脑来创作音乐,并且进一步拓宽了“DIY”的音乐理念:独立制作,独立出版,独立发行。来自澳大利亚南部的“Cooperblack”电子组合就是其中一个代表。
Cooperblack是Jeremy D Conlon使用的一个创作笔名。以这个名字创作过的作品,包括从现场表演,到为影像和艺术展览而作的声乐作品等等各个方面。Conlon身兼多职,计有:作曲家,音乐家,影象艺术家,音乐制作人以及调音师。他已经在音乐这一领域浸淫了11年之久,成功地组建了“The
Violets”乐队和他自己的电子组合“Cooperblack”,并且获得了许多奖项和乐评界的一致好评。Conlon在艺术上的成就是和他勤奋的学习分不开的,他最近还在弗林德尔街音乐学校继续攻读编曲的学士学位,相关科目包括作曲、管弦乐编曲、音乐理论、音乐历史、以及一些在音乐技术方面的合格证书,包括数码录音技术、midi、Protools
and Cubase等等。
Cooperblack在1992年组建,由Jeremy D Conlon和The Violets乐队另外一个成员Tyson
Hoprich组成。Cooperblack在1994年独立制作完成了以磁带形式发行的专辑《Tenth Hour Degree》,在1998年自资出版了专辑《Interpacer》,这也是Cooperblack第一张正式的唱片。之后Conlon频繁地参与了一些Video制作和戏剧配乐工作。直到1999年,才发行了新的单曲《Presbus》,并在Limelight厂牌的联系下,得以在全澳州的电台播放。
这是一张充满焦虑不安,神经质般混乱的优秀实验专辑。同名标题曲在女声的念白中开始,奇特的音调,一些神秘的谵语串联在一起,男人的呓语纠缠着女孩的天真哼唱,漂浮在一片沉重的节拍之上,听起来诡异阴冷。相信看过“Presbus”Video的人会有更加深切的体会,整个Video只有一些玩具机器人的简单动作和闪现着单词的极简画面,但却散发出天才和神经病的双重精神分裂倾向。专辑的另外一首作品“Bombs"延续了之前的男女双声部,不同的是,除了一男一女的主线之外,还穿插着另外一个低沉沙哑喃喃自语的男声,中段加入的歌特式合唱以及贯穿到底的工业缓拍则将整体黑暗氛围进一步抬高,结尾时的神秘男声回荡在一片孤寂的大地上,仿佛让人又一次回到当初Portishead的“Western
Eyes”营造的苍凉意境中去。
但显然,名利对于这两个年轻人来说可有可无,Cooperblack在交由其他厂牌发行了《Presbus》之后,又重新回到了最初的"DIY"道路上。2001年,他们再次独立完成了一张新EP《Item
v4》,并将其5首作品全部以Mp3的形式放在了自己网站上提供下载。相对前一年的《Presbus》专辑,这张新EP出现了套路化的节拍编排,当然,一些充满狂想式的灵感不小心散落在了角落里,仔细聆听还是能辨认出来。开篇曲“Lost
Angeles”里的开头人声大概会让很多人吓一跳,似男非男,似女非女,似人非人,似鬼非鬼,要多妖娆有多妖娆。之后,病态的男声低语悄无声息地缓缓踱入,高压的工业缓拍则从头到尾笼罩之上,中间飘出的一段口哨更是为之添了一份鬼魅。此外,你还可以在其他作品中到到高亢冷艳的女声、碎碎的刮碟声这些熟悉的Trip-Hop标志。
Cooperblack的现场表演倾向于Trip-Hop和爵士的混合风格,并在此基础上结合现场影像表演和实验性的电子乐。值得一提的是,他们从来没有两场表演是完全一样的,看完每一场的表演你都会有不同的体验。Cooperblack还经常会邀请客座的表演者和音乐人,最近他们正和Tyson
Hoprich进行现场合作。
最后有必要对这个和Conlon有着密切联系的Limelight厂牌做一下简单介绍。厂牌全称为“Limelight
Artist Services”,于1997年正式成立,以澳州南部为基地,最早的厂牌管理人是Kaotic Lounge,在1998年又分出一个子厂牌Black
Sheep,主要集结了一些作词人和歌手。同年,Limelight Artist Services在前任经理(现在他是另外一个厂牌的A&R经理)手中接管The
Violets,第二年Limelight又取得了Cooperblack的管理权。最近,Limelight Artist Services被并入了SHout!
Artist Management,管理人员为J-DED。SHout! Artist Management旗下成立了一个部门“SLAM presents”,专门为学校的年轻乐队提供支持和演出经验,并提供固定的教学,内容包括宣传、制作、演出、风格、以及确保更多演出的机会等等。
